Things to see in Procida
A fortified village, a thousand-year-old abbey, a palace that was both a royal residence and a prison, the fishing village that became the island's symbol and an island-reserve reached by a bridge. All less than half an hour from the port.

Terra Murata
The fortified village of medieval origin sits at the highest point of Procida, 91 metres above the sea. Within its walls are the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo and Palazzo d'Avalos; from the top you can see the bay of Chiaia and, in the distance, Ischia. The last stretch of road is a steep climb.

Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo
The church was founded in 1026 in honour of Sant'Angelo and in the 15th century became a Benedictine monastery. The nave has a coffered ceiling in wood and gold, with Luigi Garzi's canvas «Saint Michael the Archangel defeating the rebel angels». The museum spreads over three levels: an 18th-century nativity scene, a library of about eight thousand volumes and an ossuary.
Palazzo d'Avalos
Built around 1563 for Cardinal Innico d'Avalos d'Aragona, it was a summer residence of the Bourbon kings and from 1830 a prison, in use until 1988. After a long restoration it reopened to the public in December 2016 and today can be seen on guided tours run by the Municipality of Procida.
Corricella
The oldest village on the island: the houses step down like an amphitheatre to the fishermen's harbour. The story goes that they were painted different colours so every fisherman could recognise his own from the sea. Scenes of «Il Postino» were filmed here. You reach the harbour on foot: your vehicle stays at the top.
Vivara
The 0.4 km² islet is the rim of an ancient volcanic crater and has been a state nature reserve since 2002. A bridge closed to traffic, built in 1957, links it to Procida; remains of a Bronze Age settlement have been found on the island. It has been open to visitors again since 2023: before you go, check how and when you can visit.
Marina di Chiaiolella
On the other side of the island, below Santa Margherita hill, is the little harbour of Chiaiolella with its beach, bars and restaurants along the marina. The bridge to Vivara is a few steps away: the right place to end your tour by the sea.
