An island of fishermen and sailors
Procida covers 4.26 km², including the islet of Vivara, and has about ten thousand inhabitants. No big hotels or long avenues: small fishing harbours, pastel-coloured houses and narrow lanes running down to the sea. In 2022 it was the Italian Capital of Culture.

Terra Murata and Corricella
At the highest point of the island, 91 metres up, stands Terra Murata: the fortified medieval village with the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo and Palazzo d'Avalos, built in 1563. Below its walls lies Corricella, the fishing village of colourful houses that became the symbol of Procida. To the south-west a bridge leads to Vivara, a state nature reserve since 2002.

The beaches
On the west side Ciraccio and Chiaiolella form one long sandy beach you can reach by scooter or e-bike. Chiaia beach is reached down a long flight of steps. No road reaches Pozzo Vecchio cove: you leave your vehicle at the cemetery and walk down the stairs.

Where to eat
Lunch on the little harbour of Corricella is a classic: among the historic places is Bar Ristorante Graziella, open since 1964. At Marina di Chiaiolella you can have dinner facing the sunset, for example at Da Mariano. Worth trying: lemon salad, made with Procida's big, mild lemon, and the «lingua», a pastry filled with custard.

Getting there
Ferries and hydrofoils link Procida with Naples, Pozzuoli, Ischia and Monte di Procida, and almost all of them arrive at Marina Grande. Timetables and fares change with the season: check them on the ferry companies' websites before you travel.

Procida in one day
Arrive at Marina Grande in the morning and leave your suitcase at the port. Ride up to Terra Murata for the view, have lunch at Corricella, spend the afternoon at the beach at Ciraccio or Chiaiolella and be back at the port by 7pm to collect your bag before the evening ferry. By e-bike every stop is 5–15 minutes from the last.

The island of «Il Postino»
Scenes of «Il Postino» with Massimo Troisi were shot on Procida, between Corricella and Pozzo Vecchio beach, as well as scenes of «The Talented Mr. Ripley». Films with Sophia Loren, Alain Delon and Alberto Sordi were also made here.

EventsAll over the island
Island festivals
On Good Friday the Procession of the Mysteries takes place, a tradition dating back to the 16th century: sacred scenes are carried on shoulders through the streets. Between late July and early August the Sagra del Mare ends with the election of the «Graziella», a girl in traditional costume inspired by Lamartine's novel.

Getting around10–20 min anywhere
Getting around the island
Roads are narrow and parking is scarce: Procida is best explored on two wheels. By e-bike or electric scooter you reach everywhere in 10–20 minutes; at viewpoints and beaches with stairs you leave your vehicle at the top and continue on foot. If you arrive with luggage you can leave it at the port and collect it before you leave.
